Do India need compulsory military service?

|

Compulsory military service, no, Indians don't need this at all. There is still no scarcity of youths aspiring for a career in prestigious defence forces. I don't find any statistics stating that youths are drifting from armed forces for hefty paychecks of corporate world. Although I agree that there might be a very slight decrease in the number of army career volunteers due to sizable corporate salaries and gruesome payrolls in defence sector, but still there are plethora of Indian youths aiming for defence vocational.
The number of youngsters appearing in NDA and CDS examinations clearly show the fact. Problem lies deep in the system in the form of Service Selection Boards (SSB) and medical examinations. As hundreds of aspirants qualify the written examination organized by UPSC and are called for the SSB, but the number of candidates, who are able to cross this hurdle is apparently low due to the prevailing qualms regarding the SSBs. To add on the woes, the lack of state of art medical examination techniques and obsolete medical standards lead to meagre number of selected finalists. This number falls deeply short of the available vacancies, similar to the case of this year's final selection.
Sainik Schools, Military Schools and RIMC are few institutions, which are pumping thousands of worthy officer-like materials every year but they are not being selected, or even though they are selected, they are left wondering after medical examinations. So, the problem lies within the system. Armed forces and Defence Ministry need to look in the matter profoundly, instead of thinking of compulsory military service.
